Cocoa & Cram is a Naperville Education Foundation (NEF) supported Before & After school program, led by the Naperville North High School (NNHS) Home & School Association.
“Cocoa & Cram is an opportunity for students to get in those last minute questions with teachers before finals, enjoy some hot cocoa and snacks and study with their peers,” explained Stephanie Hebron, NEF Board Chair.
Naperville North senior Arnav Nagpal volunteered to be an announcer at this year’s Cocoa & Cram event.
“I have always enjoyed attending group study events with my friends and teachers because they give me a chance to prepare, clarify doubts, and relieve stress leading up to exams,” Nagpal shared. “This year, when one of the biggest sponsors of our robotics team needed an announcer, I immediately volunteered. As the captain of the robotics team, it felt natural to step up and give back in a small way to support something I have always genuinely enjoyed being part of.”
In December, NEF paid 24 staff member tutors to help around 500 students prepare for finals. The NNHS Home & School Association provides hot cocoa, snacks and even raffles for this two hour event. The event is extremely well loved in the NNHS community.
“I think it shows how much students love it when they’re lining up outside to get in,” Hebron said. “It gives them the chance to ask that last question and have some hot cocoa.”
As a student himself, Nagpal understands the importance of a supportive community event like Cocoa & Cram.
“Cocoa & Cram creates a supportive environment where students can quickly ask questions, collaborate with peers, and get guidance from teachers without needing to schedule formal meetings,” said Nagpal. “It not only strengthens academic confidence but also reduces anxiety.”
Before & After School program funding supports a range of opportunities for students from elementary to high school. Schools decide what program would best fit their students’ needs, and NEF funding allows staff to run the program outside of school hours.
Other Before & After School programs funded by NEF in the past include the Community Resource Center, Math Club and Study Skills.
